OPTICAL WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS
The European Collaborative Research Network on Optical Wireless Communications (ECRN) brings together leading experts from universities across Europe to advance the science and engineering of next-generation optical wireless systems. The network unites internationally recognised researchers including Zabih Ghassemlooy (Northumbria University, UK), Stanislav Zvanovec (Czech Technical University in Prague, Czechia), Luís Nero Alves (University of Aveiro / Instituto de Telecomunicações, Portugal), Joaquin Perez (University of Valencia, Spain), and Anna Maria Vegni (Roma Tre University, Italy). Through close scientific collaboration, shared publications, and the organisation of specialised workshops and conferences, ECRN serves as a platform for exchanging knowledge and driving innovation in visible-light communications, free-space optics, hybrid RF/optical systems, and emerging optical technologies for terrestrial, aerial, satellite, and underwater networks.

ECRN operates as a dynamic research community strongly connected through European initiatives such as the NEWFOCUS COST Action, major collaborative projects, and long-standing academic partnerships. Members of the network actively contribute to the development of OWC standards, experimental testbeds, and interdisciplinary research bridging communications, photonics, electromagnetics, and networking. ECRN’s mission is to strengthen Europe’s leadership in Optical Wireless Communications by fostering cooperation, supporting early-career researchers, and promoting high-impact scientific progress across the continent.
